Common Species of Cockroach in Southern California
- German Cockroach (Blattella germanica): This small, light brown cockroach is one of the most widespread species in Riverside. Known for their rapid reproduction rates, German cockroaches are notorious for infesting kitchens, bathrooms, and other areas where food and moisture are available.
- American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana): Often referred to as “water bugs” or “palmetto bugs,” these large, reddish-brown cockroaches are known for their preference for warm, damp environments. They commonly inhabit basements, crawl spaces, and sewer systems.
- Oriental Cockroach (Blatta orientalis): These dark brown or black cockroaches are sometimes called “water bugs” due to their affinity for moist areas. Oriental cockroaches are typically found in drains, sewers, and other damp locations around homes and businesses.
- Brown-Banded Cockroach (Supella longipalpa): Smaller than the American and Oriental species, these cockroaches are light brown with distinctive banding across their wings. They prefer warmer, drier environments, making them common invaders of Riverside homes, particularly in areas like attics and closets.
At Akela Pest Control, our expert technicians are well-versed in identifying and treating each of these prevalent cockroach species. If you spot signs of cockroaches around your home or business, contact our team as soon as possible.
